<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwZwBIzVYMIpnNRuH6n39JZsfY6qRtMUjnTDdsC9bpaqTbF_kyjIUvSD9lRvK3dH8nKXr-0cSXCrGcGpLRa4zHn1n5QUh4ItxZTVfO-OkzO0Lo1QbOgbQYftB8BUGKW6vgsEuJRzrqpscT/s1600/ABM_1386483766.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwZwBIzVYMIpnNRuH6n39JZsfY6qRtMUjnTDdsC9bpaqTbF_kyjIUvSD9lRvK3dH8nKXr-0cSXCrGcGpLRa4zHn1n5QUh4ItxZTVfO-OkzO0Lo1QbOgbQYftB8BUGKW6vgsEuJRzrqpscT/s320/ABM_1386483766.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
For our church Christmas party I was in charge of bringing a dessert. I had some Andes candy cane bits that I wanted to use somehow, so I decided on mini chocolate cupcakes with a peppermint frosting. My approach to frosting tends to be "mix some things together until it tastes good". Sometimes this results in making WAY too much frosting in my effort to get it just right, but this time around it actually came together really well in easy measurements that I can actually remember :)<br />
<br />
This frosting is nice because it has subtle flavours, isn't too sweet, and holds a piping shape well. If you want a stronger peppermint flavour or a thicker frosting, just add a little extra extract and sugar! It makes enough to generously frost 24 regular sized cupcakes, 48 mini ones, a 9x13 cake, or a double layer 9" round cake (so basically, one box cake mix :)<br />
<br />
<u>Peppermint Cream Cheese Frosting</u><br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>1/2 cup butter (softened)</li>
<li>8oz cream cheese (softened)</li>
<li>3-4 cups icing sugar</li>
<li>1-2 tsp peppermint extract</li>
<li>1-2 tsp clear vanilla extract</li>
<li>1/2 tsp salt</li>
</ul>
<div>
Whip butter, cream cheese, 3 cups icing sugar, 1 tsp peppermint, 1 tsp vanilla, and 1/2 tsp salt. Add additional extracts to taste, and additional icing sugar to adjust consistency as needed. </div>

All three are now posted in my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/LurelsQuiltsAndMore" target="_blank">etsy shop</a>, as well!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
This one is just little, at 30x30". It's a great size for a car seat, tummy time, or just snuggling. I used the blues and oranges from the Birds and Berries line.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://orangepetaldesigns.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/birdsandberriesmoda-bundle-450.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://orangepetaldesigns.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/birdsandberriesmoda-bundle-450.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Star block patterns are pretty common. This one is just a bunch of full squares and half triangles. I just drew out the plan on some graph paper, then assembled! Very easy with a charm pack!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGdBTuT5HQR8jmmFyNsz79-lPEvaLwjN5ZpQIya1eq5XQp1L_NQUriraIv9VUNxYLxjYfTPwlCPMdqb__sf0SGAQ5Kb2p0rpGkFjQFS_6lcneWHuTawBCHH3pW0-NrV9hyphenhyphenuXFrR0HL_24l/s1600/2013-11-23+16.47.29.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGdBTuT5HQR8jmmFyNsz79-lPEvaLwjN5ZpQIya1eq5XQp1L_NQUriraIv9VUNxYLxjYfTPwlCPMdqb__sf0SGAQ5Kb2p0rpGkFjQFS_6lcneWHuTawBCHH3pW0-NrV9hyphenhyphenuXFrR0HL_24l/s320/2013-11-23+16.47.29.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

I've seen a ton of similar quilts on pinterest over the past year, so I figured I'd try my hand at it. I just cut some big parallelograms and assembled. It could easily be done using half triangles, too, but this method was faster for me. I backed it with this adorable orange and white bird fabric that I've had in my stash for at least a year.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirjbBOR4RL5HSY6ogVS8FOBOL74mWPBGO8w-iJylVUbFJXf8uxmYTa66QYb_HHJYZbEg3EzQa5YwpDAwHqUKlciFLvkVb855m1ZZS063lPC-yH5IeiX8BuhHrvS6u_8syATWdtS2McF7a_/s1600/2013-12-03+15.08.31.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirjbBOR4RL5HSY6ogVS8FOBOL74mWPBGO8w-iJylVUbFJXf8uxmYTa66QYb_HHJYZbEg3EzQa5YwpDAwHqUKlciFLvkVb855m1ZZS063lPC-yH5IeiX8BuhHrvS6u_8syATWdtS2McF7a_/s320/2013-12-03+15.08.31.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Black and white "plus sign" quilt:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZEv6pD_HU_OZV67J90mPdU1OjbFDA3b1y7kIcq2cTjPP_XkzbVUnuhxe7fEcLTDmN-SuD91BxGAWirQWuaBHfeUgRsGmKUNSOlFmQyNw5gVSquIxEPs62-twphQUTFm2Zir-VKh_t5txB/s1600/2013-12-03+15.10.08.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZEv6pD_HU_OZV67J90mPdU1OjbFDA3b1y7kIcq2cTjPP_XkzbVUnuhxe7fEcLTDmN-SuD91BxGAWirQWuaBHfeUgRsGmKUNSOlFmQyNw5gVSquIxEPs62-twphQUTFm2Zir-VKh_t5txB/s320/2013-12-03+15.10.08.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This is another quilt that I have seen around on pinterest. I like the clean, crisp lines of it! I backed it with a minty blue flannel rather than my usual plain cotton, so it's extra snuggly.<br />
<br />
I think that I'd like to add the herringbone and plus sign quilt layouts to my custom quilt listings (once I reopen the custom quilt option after baby is born :). They're so easy to customize just by changing the colours, and resizing wouldn't be a problem at all. I already have some sweet colour combos and slight modifications in mind to try!lurelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00347190169509820691noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2940448631505066395.post-3655701988453897662013-11-09T12:51:00.004-08:002013-11-09T12:51:52.359-08:00All Them ScrapsWhen I get a custom quilt order I'll usually order a bit extra so that I can get another quilt out of it. If the person wants a lot of different fabrics I'll end up with even more extra because most websites have minimum orders of 1/4-1/2 yard. If the fabric is on sale or discontinued, you might even have to buy a yard. But I don't really mind, because I can grow my stash and play around with some layouts!<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The <a href="http://whitehousediy.blogspot.com/2013/11/final-countdown-quilts.html" target="_blank">Timber Leaf and Scrappy Patchwork</a> quilts that I posted the other day had quite a lot of leftover fabric. I was able to get four more quilts out of it! I still have some extra of a few of the prints, too, which I' can use for a future project.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
All four of these quilts are currently <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/LurelsQuiltsAndMore?ref=si_shop" target="_blank">for sale in my etsy shop</a>!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For the arrow quilt, I ended up leaving off one row of blocks from the custom ordered one, so I had extra arrows to use. So I whipped up a few more to make this little crib quilt:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzo9XL1t0eousq8-eS9zfBVr9YMmExOWnSovY2YrqHI-eWlc047eB6UT8qfyhjJ2axLxhBmbTg20airyJdClLHLB2Snb9O4uvWaaW43eGxPE3dMffUE0_-tImQKUDFSLjcQ0qb4JGQbRJ4/s1600/DSC09455.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzo9XL1t0eousq8-eS9zfBVr9YMmExOWnSovY2YrqHI-eWlc047eB6UT8qfyhjJ2axLxhBmbTg20airyJdClLHLB2Snb9O4uvWaaW43eGxPE3dMffUE0_-tImQKUDFSLjcQ0qb4JGQbRJ4/s320/DSC09455.gif" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A perk of the arrow pattern is that with an extra row of stitching on some of the blocks you can get a TON of half square triangles that you would otherwise throw away. Instead, I put this scrappy chevron quilt together:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1ZsrEVu-bVueUEBkMsQzjQYUpUQ8dd2jtQ3jjRDxNKMGFhA1Z8AWoUNjHLrh9786B302BEa1ZeyIDqk0yYLcdE0-euf-6Ax5nHg5HichyaTh0Z96lyT9yu2IkFA5W00Ze8laED_woRSOt/s1600/DSC09452.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1ZsrEVu-bVueUEBkMsQzjQYUpUQ8dd2jtQ3jjRDxNKMGFhA1Z8AWoUNjHLrh9786B302BEa1ZeyIDqk0yYLcdE0-euf-6Ax5nHg5HichyaTh0Z96lyT9yu2IkFA5W00Ze8laED_woRSOt/s320/DSC09452.gif" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
For the scrappy patchwork quilt I had a ton of extra little squares. This was one of those fabric orders that I had to buy WAY more than I needed due to minimum quantities. But it worked out, because I put together this star/nine patch:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgP5Vnag98iJYypYM56j6NXmknJd226yR4Sneq-gX6Z9-K1Z75MisgY4txpe5OBVTc5L1xdp8n_226IAHmXxb_ThTaVvKqPK7SOMUJ_4_9TGXovNdlSoHQkLsTWBKIh6ByCu_rf6MNTBTNI/s1600/DSC09461.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgP5Vnag98iJYypYM56j6NXmknJd226yR4Sneq-gX6Z9-K1Z75MisgY4txpe5OBVTc5L1xdp8n_226IAHmXxb_ThTaVvKqPK7SOMUJ_4_9TGXovNdlSoHQkLsTWBKIh6ByCu_rf6MNTBTNI/s320/DSC09461.gif" width="302" /></a></div>

Go check them out in my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/LurelsQuiltsAndMore?ref=si_shop" target="_blank">etsy shop</a>! I'm also still accepting custom orders for Christmas-- but not for long, so go look quick if you want to make that deadline!</div>

I've since had to migrate to the living room coffee table to sew. Here are a few of the latest custom orders that I've finished, and the last ones I have been able to do in my usual floor position-- and probably among the last ones I'll do before baby comes!<br />
<br />
<b>Get a Clue, Nancy Drew!</b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUw_LYi3SlqAwPb3pXP3uhznHrecx-nKy1HOAv81PdpOqSEyhw1svZ8ptqRIr7tVN9cTGbDXn4p0W-Z__0hwT1uFQcIDechDlb3qrZ-sRel21s1RrKbk1Km-l5RKufP9glmfd_eMPTKwdB/s1600/DSC09381.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUw_LYi3SlqAwPb3pXP3uhznHrecx-nKy1HOAv81PdpOqSEyhw1svZ8ptqRIr7tVN9cTGbDXn4p0W-Z__0hwT1uFQcIDechDlb3qrZ-sRel21s1RrKbk1Km-l5RKufP9glmfd_eMPTKwdB/s320/DSC09381.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
The gal who ordered this quilt had already purchased some of the Nancy Drew fabric by Moda. She sent me a picture of a quilt she saw and liked, and from there I put together my own pattern for this one. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://d2d00szk9na1qq.cloudfront.net/Product/f10d6c77-03a0-43b1-89ac-dfcb20779909/Images/Large_202434.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://d2d00szk9na1qq.cloudfront.net/Product/f10d6c77-03a0-43b1-89ac-dfcb20779909/Images/Large_202434.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Image via <a href="http://www.unitednotions.com/un_main.nsf/nancy-drew!OpenPage" target="_blank">Moda</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
What a fun fabric collection! Here is the original picture I was sent that inspired the finished design:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://img1.etsystatic.com/022/0/10660997/icm_fullxfull.29665435_eda7w0m2oa8sssk0c484.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/022/0/10660997/icm_fullxfull.29665435_eda7w0m2oa8sssk0c484.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And here's my very technical drawing of the proposed design:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i42.tinypic.com/2hp2dzo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://i42.tinypic.com/2hp2dzo.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
It was fun using this fabric with a custom pattern, and the girl was thrilled with the result!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Scrappy Patchwork</b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
This is one of the simplest quilts for me to make. There is little cutting and no piecing! You can really just zip it together in a few hours. It also has a unique scrappy look to it since the squares have raw edges. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/75Znck1.jpg?1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://i.imgur.com/75Znck1.jpg?1" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
I wish that I had gotten a better closeup of this one! The fabrics the customer picked out were from several different lines, but worked super well together. One of them was flannel instead of quilting cotton, so there was an extra texture in it. I ended up ordering extra fabric so I have another quilt top in the works with it. I'll take better pictures of that one :)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Timber Leaf Arrow</b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
I've noticed this fabric line before, and I love it! I was pretty stoked to get to make a quilt with it!</div>

The customer had just picked out a few that she wanted. It was super hard to find them, since the line has been out for a while. After seeing them in person, I wish that I had used them sooner! I'd probably make more quilts with it for myself!</div>

Sam has been using this plain, worn out folding chair as a computer chair for three years. Besides it being ugly, I haven't had a good excuse to replace it since it works just fine. But I finally got around to fixing it up a bit! I can't believe that I didn't do it sooner! It was easy and cheap, and made a big difference.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First I just unscrewed the fabric pieces/plastic and cleaned the metal base. I did a few coats of super strong black spray paint that is made to adhere well to metal. I then wrapped/glued a cute canvas weight fabric around the old fabric pieces and reattached. Easy!</div>

I loved making this crib size quilt! For one thing, it was a really nice break from the monster king quilts I've had a ton of orders for. It's such an easy pattern to do-- especially when you use rectangles instead of triangles. The lady I made it for loved it, and sent me a picture of it in her nursery:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://img0.etsystatic.com/002/0/11435229/icm_fullxfull.28109630_mvdotjg3m804ck4os0og.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://img0.etsystatic.com/002/0/11435229/icm_fullxfull.28109630_mvdotjg3m804ck4os0og.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's hard to tell in the pictures, but there are actually four shades of pink (the two darkest ones are a bit different). But either way, I think that it's pretty cute! My next "just for fun" quilt might just have to be another one of these, but with blue or grey!</div>

I love a good herringbone. To me, it's like a more timeless chevron. Here are two herringbone quilts that I've made that put a little bit of a twist on the classic herringbone.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Scrappy Herringbone</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I started making this quilt to use on our bed, and as much as I loved the fabric line, I just changed my mind on keeping it. I made it into a short twin instead, and kept some of the extra pieces to use for a second baby quilt. Rather than being uniform thicknesses, the pieces are random. I've since sold this quilt in my etsy shop.</div>

I love all of the white space on this quilt. For one thing, I love how it looks-- but it also really cuts down on time (you don't have to worry about specific piecing placement) and money (single cut discount coupons)!lurelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00347190169509820691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2940448631505066395.post-94550548793101502013-06-28T22:54:00.002-07:002013-06-28T22:54:30.990-07:00Three King Size Quilts: NEVER AGAIN.I just finished my last king size quilt order that came through before I set my etsy shop to "vacation". They make pretty good money-- but holy cow, I don't know that it's worth it. They are a pain in the BUTT to topstitch. I don't think I'll be doing a king (or queen!) custom quilt order unless I have one of the long arm monsters!<br />

This one is probably my favourite of the three. The lady had picked out SUPER random fabrics for the front, so I wasn't sure how it would all look together, but she proved to be much more wise and daring than I!<br />

If I remember correctly, I wore out one of them within the first few years so my mom put that one away in storage. I moved onto the next quilt, and by the time I wore it out I was old enough to refuse having that one put away too. I kept using it for a long time. And by "a long time", I mean that I used it up until when I got married. At that point I put it away in storage, because I didn't want Sam knowing that crazy bit of me yet.<br />
<br />
A few months ago I rediscovered my shabby little blanket, and pulled it out. Sam was quite shocked and <strike>un</strike>impressed by how lovely it looks. He humoured me for a few weeks, then started <strike>subtly</strike> suggesting that I make myself a new quilt to snuggle with.<br />
<br />
I don't really see what's wrong with this lovely item:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLHhTTeHpi0OWx0o-lScWSXgqUnY5cbFPZ22saWEMzjC3Elx5fYkmziIC1osni6qjxd_1JJkZz4YYlEB1scvyZ5EMjPRfObfxadlHbxdyth_g5AawSq3Q3TX1DDATN24nUPbaIzIy4oKuR/s1600/oldblanket.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="237" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLHhTTeHpi0OWx0o-lScWSXgqUnY5cbFPZ22saWEMzjC3Elx5fYkmziIC1osni6qjxd_1JJkZz4YYlEB1scvyZ5EMjPRfObfxadlHbxdyth_g5AawSq3Q3TX1DDATN24nUPbaIzIy4oKuR/s400/oldblanket.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pretty nice, eh?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
So I got to work. I used the <a href="http://www.cluckclucksewpatterns.com/2012/04/pow-wow.html" target="_blank">Pow-wow</a> pattern from <a href="http://www.cluckclucksewpatterns.com/" target="_blank">Cluck Cluck Sew</a>, who has some of my favourite patterns and tutorials. I just added a few more blocks to make it bigger. The fabric is by <a href="http://www.jansdotter.com/" target="_blank">Lotta Jansdotter</a>, who does some really amazing lines. I had to search and search to find all the fabric I wanted, since it was an older line and the big stores had mostly run out. I'm really happy about how it turned out!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-ESJKDDxjBpkm4gC6i2IG3fr45cm79cwxuAdXFM6sSiURcQDI1j3j_1ehJdlFfcN_RblGA8NJCij4-q7jOeF_q9T_ZeHXEx23e3qd1kF5a6jPY355G1RQEH8LM7f-fndCS5T-5ruRMkdU/s1600/powwow.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-ESJKDDxjBpkm4gC6i2IG3fr45cm79cwxuAdXFM6sSiURcQDI1j3j_1ehJdlFfcN_RblGA8NJCij4-q7jOeF_q9T_ZeHXEx23e3qd1kF5a6jPY355G1RQEH8LM7f-fndCS5T-5ruRMkdU/s640/powwow.jpg" width="508" /></a></div>
I guess it's a step up from my old baby quilt. This new one hasn't lost half the batting and turned transparent. It will take a lot of washings and use to feel as nice, though :)lurelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00347190169509820691noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2940448631505066395.post-77154251794034404092012-12-17T17:34:00.001-08:002012-12-17T17:34:36.392-08:00Patchwork chevrons for boys<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
At the end of November I had a lady order a custom patchwork chevron quilt from <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/LurelsQuiltsAndMore?ref=si_shop" target="_blank">my Etsy shop</a>. She wanted it for her son, and I was thrilled that she really liked the <a href="http://www.cloud9fabrics.com/simpatico.html" target="_blank">Simpatico line from Cloud 9</a>. I've been admiring it, but didn't have any reason to use it.</div>

She wanted to use just the yellow, blue, and grey, and I think it turned out great!</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I LOVE making<a href="http://whitehousediy.blogspot.com/2012/07/patchwork-chevron-quilt.html" target="_blank"> this quilt</a>, because even though it's quite large, it takes a lot less time to make than others. This time around I also had a new iron and ironing board to work with, which made a huge difference in both time and quality. </div>

I totally do. I only have a few quilts in there so far, but I've still gotten a lot of traffic. I was pleasantly surprised, just one week after opening it, to receive a message from a girl in Texas who wanted me to do a custom quilt for her. Even more pleasantly surprising, the design she wanted is a fairly quick and easy one to do, and she wanted me to use two of my favourite girly fabric line<span id="goog_376526531"></span><span id="goog_376526532"></span>s.<br />
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ5DHNToJpMRM1rq4OuiRIBT1DmswAj011ShJ20DAhQ-uochInkxfW6HYI2Cdbhwrf17P2Nnru1yaVKJFtvez1L2FDzW0vBUzvmSvLJGwqv10-nNK3prtTrALJobBdg1-xrx01NGHvWX0k/s1600/subwayerin-close.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ5DHNToJpMRM1rq4OuiRIBT1DmswAj011ShJ20DAhQ-uochInkxfW6HYI2Cdbhwrf17P2Nnru1yaVKJFtvez1L2FDzW0vBUzvmSvLJGwqv10-nNK3prtTrALJobBdg1-xrx01NGHvWX0k/s320/subwayerin-close.gif" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used reds, pinks, blues, and yellows from Vintage Modern, which I have used before, and the brand new line Marmalade. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB8pK29692G3qgl56VdUnmXAMK8me-TeAeWY5U7cNykHfK_oGPNs8Jkgk0ydjDR5GKda3m4xyPMLH2JQLn8mM0JRm18Oge1PmchHMN4TU8jwTuXxzAjG95XW1QYXvVoaSm0IgYu5yVL-1E/s1600/subwayerin.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB8pK29692G3qgl56VdUnmXAMK8me-TeAeWY5U7cNykHfK_oGPNs8Jkgk0ydjDR5GKda3m4xyPMLH2JQLn8mM0JRm18Oge1PmchHMN4TU8jwTuXxzAjG95XW1QYXvVoaSm0IgYu5yVL-1E/s320/subwayerin.gif" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I just "made up" the pattern. It's an easy one to do, and actually a great beginner top to try if you want to start up quilting!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I then finished it with a vine/leaf and flowers topstitching and a "raggedy" edge made from scraps from the quilt top.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioJ3YTHGoTyDx7kgklU7Tro1ftFRxLmfc7cxa4BA28MZ6AzLGI-txcnmoN-QmnbZCUh0Cp1LPrzB5X4joierIvb-h5NmaiIGjlg3OEIWdcQA19oubTckTajZeIU6IXVEaPtUhGWNbU81Ar/s1600/subwayfolderin.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="178" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioJ3YTHGoTyDx7kgklU7Tro1ftFRxLmfc7cxa4BA28MZ6AzLGI-txcnmoN-QmnbZCUh0Cp1LPrzB5X4joierIvb-h5NmaiIGjlg3OEIWdcQA19oubTckTajZeIU6IXVEaPtUhGWNbU81Ar/s320/subwayfolderin.gif" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm pretty happy with how it turned out! The girl who ordered it LOVES it and has been raving about it, which makes me happy too :)</div>

I decided to invest in a ruffler foot that makes ruffles a pleats a <i>breeze. </i>Since the other project is for somebody else I figured that I should practice on something of my own first. I got the basic idea and tutorial from {<a href="http://elleapparel.blogspot.com/2011/02/anthropology-ruffle-shower-curtain.html" target="_blank">Elle Apparel</a>}. I did end up doing things differently, but she does have a great tutorial. <br />
<br />
Our bathroom is nice in and of itself. But I was not a fan of our $2 white plastic shower curtain that we've had for two years. I didn't really have any sort of decoration going on.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/56cf94d1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/56cf94d1.jpg" width="225" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">meh,</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
There was also a lot of edge finishing required for this (and my other) project, and I'm <i>so </i>grateful for a lady in my ward who let me borrow her serger. It has saved me many hours.<br />
<br />
Here is the finished project:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/f5705929.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/f5705929.jpg" width="225" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">not bad, eh?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The liner is still in there, on the inside of the tub. I think my next project will be doing something to that weird shelf you can see in the bottom left corner.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also had some beachy pictures printed and put them up on the blank wall. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/234b72ca.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/234b72ca.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Now I just need to make or find a cute clock so that I can see what time it is while I'm doing my hair <strike>so that I'm late less often.</strike> (I have a lot of hair right now, ok?)<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Fabric: $35</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

I've been searching for the perfect table to put in the entryway. We've been leaving our junk on the chevron bench, which is a pain because I'm scared I'll accidentally damage the fabric and it makes it hard to open it up to get your shoes! I finally found the perfect sideboard at DI for a great price-- and I'm pretty stoked about it. It's sitting in the backyard sanded and with the first layer on primer, just waiting for a second coat. I'm excited!</div>

</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have trouble finding the right nail polish colours. I also find that glitter nail polish just doesn't get the kind of coverage I want. I'm also all for saving money. The solution? Buy some loose glitter from a craft store and use with some plain polish! You can get a small vile for $1-2 and it lasts a <i>really </i>long time. There are also a ton of different colour options!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have found that the finer the crystals, the easier it is to make it nice and smooth. The rougher crystals work as well, but just be aware that your nails will feel a little rough to the touch.<br />
My other best tip is to let everything dry <i>really well</i> after dipping in glitter and then after the clear coat to ensure that you get a nice strong hold. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A look that I think is cute is to paint four nails matte, and then do one nail in a glitter of the same colour.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Enjoy!</div>

I didn't end up using it, but while I was at the fabric store looking for another pattern I saw this one and remembered that I had it. I found a great jersey knit, got home, and got to work.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/6319.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/6319.jpg" width="302" /></a></div>
If you're interested in the pattern, it's McCall's 6319.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/bluedress.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/bluedress.jpg" width="358" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My chiropractor would be ashamed of my posture.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I really like how it turned out. It's incredibly comfortable, and the advantage of jersey knit is minimal edge finishing (which given my lack of a serger is just fantastic). It's a little hard to see from the picture, but there is also a chunky gold zipper at the one shoulder, which really adds to it. Plus, the top is even lined!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<i>Pattern: $1.99 (on sale)</i></div>

After almost a month of no takers, I figured I had might as well do something interesting with it and see if an interest would be sparked if it looked a little fancier.<br />
After a mere hour of work, the transformation is complete:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/beforecoffeetablecopy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="305" src="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/beforecoffeetablecopy.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/DamaskCoffeeTable.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/DamaskCoffeeTable.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is actually a really, really easy project to do. I might even do this with the side table in our living room!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Supplies:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>Sandpaper</li>
<li>Primer</li>
<li>Paint</li>
<li>Fabric (home decor weight fabric works best)</li>
<li>Mod Podge</li>
<li>Paintbrush</li>
<li>Plastic card (ex: old credit card) to spread out glue</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First, just give the table legs a sand with a medium grit sandpaper. Wipe off the dust.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Give the legs a primer coat (I love using Kilz primer spray) or two. It's best to do multiple, thin coats rather than trying to get a thick layer on in one go. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Paint the legs!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(**Note: if your table surface is a strong colour or pattern or your fabric is thin, I would recommend painting your table surface white or black as well)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once everything is dry, cut out your fabric to extend about an inch <i>past </i>the end of the table top. Don't cut it the exact size yet!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Slather a medium-thick layer of Mod Podge onto the table surface. Carefully place your fabric on top and smooth it out really well. Using the edge of an old credit card/membership card really helps.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now spread the MP over the top of the fabric. Don't be scared- just cover it well, flatten it out evenly, and it will dry clear.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Let the fabric dry. You will likely notice that your fabric will constrict/shrink a bit at this point. This is why you left a little extra fabric on there!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/IMAG0532.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/IMAG0532.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once everything it dry, grab a ruler and a rotary cutter (or exacto knife) and very carefully trim off the excess fabric. You may need to put a little extra MP on the edges if they are a little loose.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you are going to use the surface a lot, I would also recommend spraying a clear gloss sealant on there as well to improve durability. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And there you have it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Yes, I need to vacuum. It's from the quilt I was working on today!</td></tr>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Coffee table: $10 (already had, but that's what it cost originally)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Primer: $2.50 (half of a $5 can)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Paint: $2 (half a $4 can)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Fabric: $8 (already had!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Mod Podge: $1 (barely any of my jar)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Approximate cost: $23.50 (but only $4.50 if you don't count what I already had :)</div>lurelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00347190169509820691noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2940448631505066395.post-58975349182746349922012-07-22T21:11:00.001-07:002012-07-22T21:12:00.209-07:00Patchwork Chevron Quilt<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/laydown-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="416" src="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/laydown-1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
For my sister in law Kiersten's birthday I did this patchwork chevron quilt. I <i>loved </i>this pattern. For one thing, you have barely any scraps, so you get a good bang for your buck. You also have a heck of a lot less cutting and piecing because all of the print pieces are just 5" pieces from charm packs. The white setting material are just big ol' triangles.<br />
While making the front is very quick, the finishing is not so fast. This was the first finishing job I've done on anything bigger than a crib, and this baby was almost 80" square. That's a lot of top stitching, and a lot of fabric to try to cram through a home machine. I just did straight lines going from both directions of various distances apart, but I'd love to try this pattern again with some free motion finishing. I think it turned out pretty well, though, and hopefully Kiersten will enjoy it :)<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/samholdquilt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/samholdquilt.jpg" width="385" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sam's contribution to the gift was holding it up for a picture (and loading new netflix videos for me while I sewed)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The pattern is by {<a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/2012/01/patchwork-chevron-quilt.html#more" target="_blank">Jeni</a>} from the Moda Bakeshop blog, and the fabric is Vintage Modern by {<a href="http://www.unitednotions.com/un_main.nsf/bonnie-camille!OpenPage" target="_blank">Bonnie and Camille</a>}. I was super excited when Kiersten said she liked that fabric line-- I've been dying to use it for something, and this was my chance!lurelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00347190169509820691noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2940448631505066395.post-43085716617292071662012-07-19T11:19:00.000-07:002012-07-19T11:19:13.123-07:00Entry Art<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A month and a half after moving in, I finally have the wall art in the entryway set up!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The mirror is from Ikea, the tree canvas is from Hobby Lobby, and all of the picture frames are from DI (a goodwill store in Utah). Each frame cost between $0.50-1.50! They also used to be weird bronze or brown, but a coat of spray primer and some paint sure made them look nice.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/wallart.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/wallart.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've kept a copy of keys from our apartments each time we've moved to make this little display:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/keys.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="221" src="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/keys.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This clock used to be a black, plain, $3 clock from Walmart. I just pulled off the clear plastic front and glued a piece of scrapbook paper over the numbers and painted the edge. Not bad, eh?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love how it turned out! The top is split into two hinged tops, and you can fit a lot of shoes in that thing! It's a step up from the big cardboard box that our pots and pans came in.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;">I got my inspiration from {</span><a href="http://ana-white.com/2010/05/furniture-plans-outdoor-storage-bench.html" target="_blank">this plan</a><span style="background-color: white;">}. It took a lot of work and cost more than I thought it would (and would normally spend) but I love the end result.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/IMAG0397header.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/IMAG0397header.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
I found the chair on craigslist, where a lady was selling it for $10. I spent at least two weeks pulling out the <i>many </i>staples and cutting myself on the evil nails (and just letting it sit there in my living room being ugly and torn apart).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/NAILS.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/NAILS.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">THE WORST!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/DSCF6203edit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i1270.photobucket.com/albums/jj604/brookslu/DSCF6203edit.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The fluff made me SO itchy!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
When I finally got it dismantled, I laid out all of the fabric pieces as a pattern to determine how much new fabric I would need to buy to cover the chair. There are also plenty of {<a href="http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/how-much-fabric-should-you-buy-139425" target="_blank">online guides</a>} for how much fabric you need to upholster different common items.<br />
<br />
I found the fabric at {<a href="http://www.hancockfabrics.com/" target="_blank">Hancock Fabrics</a>}. They have a pretty great selection of discount upholstery fabrics! I was deciding between this brown/white zebra print and a solid sage green. I figured that a solid would be a lot easier for my first upholstery fabric, but I got brave and decided to try something with a lot more "wow" factor. If I'm going to spend all this time working on this awful chair, it had might as well be awesome! I was surprised with myself for even considering the zebra. If you know me at all you'll know that I'm not really an animal print person, but this just seemed right! I don't know if you can tell in the pictures, but it's a dark brown and white print (not black :)<br />
<br />
First I spray painted the legs, using Kilz primer and Rustoleum white spray paint.<br />
<br />
Using the old fabric piece as a template, I cut out rough sizes of the fabric I would need. I put in all new cushioning (the fact that the old stuff made me so itchy seemed sketchy), and just went to work putting stuff on. <br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Not going to lie-- it's really, <i>really, </i>not perfect. I got impatient and stopped following the way it was put together originally and just start putting things on where I thought it would work. It you don't shove your hands in the cracks or look at it <i>too </i>closely I think it looks pretty good. It definitely looks better than it did before!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So will I do another upholstery project? Probably. I'm going to wait until I forget about what a pain in the butt this one was, though, and can only remember how awesome the result was. </div>

Last night I finished a super cute pillow cover. It was super easy to make, thanks to the tutorial by {<a href="http://www.e-tells-tales.com/2011/03/tutorial-bow-pillow-cover-win-pillow.html" target="_blank">E Tells Tales</a>}. I made mine a little smaller though, so that it would be tighter around the pillow.</div>

You may also notice a pretty funky fabric in the background. I'm super excited to show off that project. What a before/after that one is!lurelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00347190169509820691noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2940448631505066395.post-57654830510916378122012-06-25T18:44:00.001-07:002012-06-25T18:48:19.295-07:00Put a bird on it!This morning I headed down to the HD to get some board to back the shelves. Just for the record, spray painting in intense wind makes your can run out WAY faster, and gets you painted arms.<br />
I painted the board all white, but I just wasn't feeling it. I came inside and asked Sam what I should do, and he said, "put a bird on it!"<br />

<span style="background-color: white; text-align: left;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; text-align: left;">It was half a joke, half serious, because my brilliant husband knows I actually think birds on things are great.</span><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
I penciled out a design and then painted it in with some black paint.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I might have some scrapbooking and sewing skills, but I'm not too hot at drawing, so I'm pretty proud of myself.<br />

<br />
Not too bad, if I do say so myself. I think the backing is kind of fun and makes the sort of hoboish shelves look a little more like it's supposed to be this way.<br />
<br />
They are super heavy though. I'm going to need some strong brothers to come move it into the house for me!<br />
